Sometimes it's the simple things that are the most rewarding.
So I was out walking the dog this morning and came across a street where some kids had obviously been having fun. One end of the entire street was covered in chalk drawings. Not just pictures of things but little courses for them to ride bikes on and lots of other ideas. I’ve actually seen them do it a couple of times in the past. It’s outside a house with 3 young children. I think they’re all aged between 3-8 ish. They absolutely love doing it and from what I can see it keeps them busy hours and hours, it's a great activity for kids.
Nothing We Haven't seen Before
This is an idea you will often see at pre-schools and kindergartens and in school playgrounds. It’s great for creativity, gets kids out and about and has no rules or limits.
There are times when you are often at home with the kids wondering what ‘dadtastic' ideas you can come up with to entertain your little ones. Sometimes you rack your brain trying to come up with an activity or excursion you can do with the children to both ensure they’re having a good time and also that you’re being a great dad. It doesn’t always need to be a fully structured, costly adventure to get them away from screens, it can simply be the price of a box of chalk, which last time I checked was a couple of dollars.
Considerations
Of course you’ll need to be aware of any safety issues, as young children sitting in the middle of a road isn’t usually a good parenting strategy. But if you live in a cul-de-sac you might find it’s safe enough with a bit of supervision. Of course it doesn’t have to be a road, any bit of wall, path or hard surface will work. Hopefully, you won’t run into any ‘Karens’ or arsehole neighbours who complain about it.
Given the temporary nature of their street art all you need is a bit of rain or a hose tout it back to a 'blank canvas’. Just don’t forget to take some photos first!
